Brown (or grizzly) bears (Ursus arctos) range throughout Interior Alaska and are a favorite animal to see when visiting Denali National Park. Male’s body weight peaks in the late summer at 400-900 pounds (181-408 kg). Some have reached 1,200 pounds (544 kg). Bears are omnivores, eating both plants and animals, and will shift their diet to what is available in season. In late fall, ripening berries are a sweet treat, but bears will also be on the lookout for fish, ground squirrels, and other small mammals.
