Puffins spend most of their lives on the open ocean. In summer, they come ashore to breed and raise their young, burrowing into steep-sided cliffs to avoid predators. Tufted puffins (Fratercula cirrhata) are named for the feathers that curl back from the head. Once called sea parrots by sailors, puffins are the most colorful during the breeding season but return to more muted colors in winter. Puffins are said to fly better underwater than they do in the air, using their webbed feet for steering as they search for fish and zooplankton.
