Description
Polar Family
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska
While the largest and most predatory of the three Alaskan bear species, polar bears are highly sociable and develop deep family bonds. Like the other bears, polar bear sows raise their young for up to three years. As marine mammals, they spend their entire lives either on the coast of northern Alaska or on the sea ice. Some polar bears will go as far as thirty miles inland to den. They are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act as well as being protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
