Fireweed is not the official Alaska state flower, but maybe it should be.  Common fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) likes disturbed areas so it is often found along roadways and in forest openings created by fire, avalanche or falling trees.  It can reach five feet tall in suitable habitats.  Dwarf fireweed (Epilobium latifolium) grows on river bars and mountain slopes.  Alaskans always watch the blooms of the fireweed—when the blooms are gone, it signals winter will soon follow.  Enterprising Alaskans know how to incorporate fireweed flowers into tastey jams and jellies.

Printed in Alaska on paper that meets the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) guidelines.
