These Alaska coastal brown bear twins are having fun at the beach, but rest assured, mom is nearby. She has probably come down to the water’s edge to look for salmon trapped by the tide. She may also teach these youngsters how to dig for clams. (The long claws of an adult bear make for a great clam shovel.) Bears will modify their diet to match what is available in season and can consume a wide variety of foods including fruit, berries, insects, roots, carrion, grass, nuts, ants, beetles, and even worms. The cubs have two years to figure it all out, then mom will send them off to fend on their own.
