Born to Run
Dog mushing was designated the official Alaska state sport in 1972 and the Alaskan malamute was named the official state dog in 2010. No wonder as “man’s best friend” helps Alaskans enjoy the long cold winters. Both amateur and professional races are held throughout the state, typically from January through March. Recreational and professional mushing brings families and friends together to either participate or root for their favorite teams. Driving a team of dogs through the vast expanses of Alaska is one of life’s greatest experiences; some Alaskan families are now on their fourth generation of mushing.
