Description
Feeding Frenzy
Southeast, Alaska
A pod of Humpback whales engages in cooperative bubble-net feeding while a swarm of gulls hovers frenetically, waiting for a chance to get some scraps. Whales work together by diving below the prey and blowing a cylinder of bubbles to confuse and corral the fish into a “net”. After the fish are trapped, the group lunges through the surface with open mouths to swallow the prey. It is one of the more exciting wildlife encounters to witness in Alaska.
