Black bears (Ursus americanus) are the smallest of North America’s bears. An average adult male can weigh 200 pounds. Cubs are born in February or March and emerge from their dens in May. Although weighing about five pounds at that time, they will quickly put on weight during their first summer. Black bear cubs will remain with their mother for a year while they learn to fend for themselves. They will be able to breed by age three or four.
