Description
Owl Stare
Southeast, Alaska
A northern pygmy owl rests on a frosty plant husk in early winter at the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge, Juneau, Alaska. The northern pygmy owl is small, diurnal raptor known for “eye spots” on the back of the head, which confuses predators and songbirds. They are prolific hunters, sometimes even taking prey larger than themselves. Unlike other owls, they are not silent fliers and have a unique hunting style with an undulating flight pattern.
