The moose (Alces alces) is the largest member of the deer family and Alaska moose are the largest moose in the world.  Adult females weigh 800 to 1,300 pounds and have one to three calves in mid-May or early June.  Calves can take solid food within a few days and can swim rivers two weeks later. A mother moose will vigorously defend her young, as she knows a baby moose is a favorite food for hungry grizzly bears awakening from their dens.  Newborn calves weigh 28 to 35 pounds at birth but will grow to more than 300 pounds in just five months.

Printed in Alaska on paper that meets the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) guidelines.
